Notes
Military
William enlisted in the U.S. Navy on 4 December 1940 in Philadelphia. He served as Seaman 2nd Class onboard the USS Sabine from 27 June 1941. Then he served on board the USS Pennsylvania (VO-2) from 3 July 1941 to 28 January 1943. His vessel was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Hawaii where William survived the 7 December 1941 Japanese attack on the naval fleet. While on the USS Pennsylvania, he advanced to Aviation Ordinance Man 2nd Class. William was transferred to Naval Flight Preparatory School in Seattle, Washington on 28 January 1943.Endnotes
