Notes
Occupation
Calvin Pardee, together with other family members (in particular, brother Ariovistus "Ario" Pardee Jr.), owned Pardee Brothers Company, which owned anthracite mines in the Lattimer area, Hazle Twp., Luzerne Co., Pennsylvania. The "Lattimer Massacre" occurred when 19 unarmed striking immigrant anthracite coal miners were killed at one of the Pardee-owned mines 10 September 1897. "The miners, mostly of Polish, Slovak, Lithuanian and German ethnicity, were shot and killed by a Luzerne County sheriff's posse. Scores more workers were wounded. The massacre was a turning point in the history of the United Mine Workers (UMW)." Calvin Pardee was in the Germantown area of Philadelphia at the time of the massacre. William Rickard would have known Calvin Pardee before Pardee's death in 1923.Endnotes
