Graduation

John was president of the student body, editor of the campus newspaper and captain of the football team.

Military

During World War II, John was stationed in the Aleutian Islands. He flew 72 bombing missions in the Pacific, including the second, third and fourth raids on the Japanese home islands, made in 1943. The target was the heavily defended Paramushiro submarine base in the northern Kurile Islands. The Americans suffered serious losses during the 9½-hour, 1,600-mile round trip through inclement weather. On the final flight, in September 1943, 10 of 19 planes failed to return.

John was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement above and beyond the call of duty and three Air Medals for meritorious service.

He later told his son John, a retired Army Special Forces colonel, that the planes did not have individual nose paintings or numbers so the Japanese would not realize how few there were.

"He didn't like to talk about it," the son said.
