Notes
Birth
The obituary gives the birth place as President Twp. It is likely the residence on President Road in Pinegrove Twp. stated in the 1920 Census.Military
Joseph enlisted on 23 Jun 1941 in Pittsburgh City, PA. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant.Joseph has received the Distinguished Flying Cross and a Purple Heart, and on 1 September 2000 received the Silver Star. Joseph also received the Presidential Unit Citation.
The Distinguished Flying Cross could be awarded to any person, while serving in any capacity with the Air Corps of the Army of the United States, including the National Guard and the Organized Reserves, or with the United States Navy, since April 6th, 1917, has distinguished, or who, after approval of this Act, distinguished himself by heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight. The performance of the act of heroism must be evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty. The extraordinary achievement must have resulted in an accomplishment so exceptional and outstanding as to clearly set the individual apart from his comrades or from other persons in similar circumstances. Awards will be made only to recognize single acts of heroism or extraordinary achievement and will not be made in recognition of sustained operational activities against an armed enemy.
The Purple Heart is awarded in the name of the President of the United States to any member of an Armed force who, while serving with the U.S. Armed Services after 5 April 1917, has been wounded or killed, or who has died or may hereafter die after being wounded. A wound for which the award is made must have required treatment by a medical officer.
The Silver Star Medal is the United States' THIRD HIGHEST award exclusively for combat valor, and ranks fifth in the precedence of military awards behind the Medal of Honor, the Crosses (DSC/NC/AFC), the Defense Distinguished Service Medal (awarded by DOD), and the Distinguished Service Medals of the various branches of service. It is the highest award for combat valor that is NOT unique to any specific branch; it has been bestowed by the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marines. It may be given by any one of the individual services to not only their own members, but to members of other branches of service, foreign allies, and even to civilians for "gallantry in action" in support of combat missions of the United States military.
Occupation
He was employed for 28 years with Crane Works.Endnotes
1. US Census of 1920 - record for Field and Emma Broschart and family. Delores Uber is listed as an adopted daughter. The Uber household is listed immediately before the Broschart household, indicating that they were neighbors on Boston Avenue. The enumerator erroneously separated the family on non-consecutive sheets (sheet 4B, lines 95 to 100, and sheet 5B, lines 51 to 54, with intervening sheet 5A and its 50 lines). Adding to the confusion is that on sheet 4B, the family is the 97th family, visited on 5 April 1930, but on sheet 4B, the remainder of the family is the 98th family, visited on 7 April 1930. In spite of the blunders, it is clear that this is one family group..
