Individual Details

Oscar Levan Mensch Sr.

(29 Sep 1876 - 13 Aug 1942)

As a youth in Centralia, Oscar lost sight in his right eye. He got lime in both eyes as a result of mixing it with water doing some chore. One of his sisters (or some girl milkmaid) just happened to be nearby and emptied a pail of milk over his face, thus saving one eye. He wore a glass eye. Oscar told his grandchildren that he worked in the depths of the earth as a coal miner, and in the heights as an iron worker. Oscar was also a cornice worker and watch maker.
