Barbara Florence Broschard

(23 Nov 1930 - 13 Dec 2015)

This remarkable woman is our Mother. She lived in Gloucester City, NJ when she met my father who was allegedly on leave from the US Marines. They moved away from New Jersey for several years, but moved back in 1958. After several years of an abusive relationship, our father left us for the last time in 1963, leaving our Mother to raise us single-handedly. I was 9 years old, Joy was 7 and Michael was 2. No rules of comity or reciprocity regarding child support existed at that time, so he moved to Pennsylvania, New York and Florida to avoid paying it. Our grandmother (his mother Ethel (Nutting) Veley) wrote heart-wrenching letters (until she died in 1965) to and in support of my mother during this period.

Mom held several jobs from 1963 until 1986. We were "latch-key" kids before the term gained circulation. We were educated in the public schools. Mom saw to it that we attended CCD (Catholic indoctrination) classes on Saturday, and that we went to Mass on Sundays. When the neighborhood that we lived in in Camden became too rough, she moved us to Gloucester (near her mother Florence (Mensch) Broschard), where we all graduated from high school. She set high standards for us, and saw to it that we each received a college education. Mom saw to it that we had vacations and took us camping to the New Jersey Pine Barrens, Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, the Catskills and Adirondacks in New York, and elsewhere.

After a particularly hard day in 1986, we realized that it was her time to retire. As fate would have it, Mom's workload became even more demanding. She cared for an elderly aunt and uncle (Henry and Emma (Broschard) Geitz), then cared for her mother. In 1989, this governed the choice of a new home (and my current home) in Clarksboro, which is a rancher. Ultimately, elderly care proved too much for Mom.

The occassion of my "coming out" in 1998 created another disruption in Mom's life, when she moved nearby to Mantua, permitting me to get on with my life. Mom has survived colon cancer, two knee replacements, and an obscure ailment called vertebral basilar insufficiency (VBI). In 2010, she survived uterine cancer, Most recently in 2012, she has suffered major hip problem caused by a fractured pervis, weakened from the radiation treatment for the 2010 illness and osteoporosis. Sis and I have taken her to Hawaii for her 70th birthday, and more recently to Key West, Florida.

Mom never remarried. Even though her marriage to my father was disastrous, she still enjoyed attending annual Veley family reunions in upstate New York, and visiting and staying with relatives.
