Samuel Kellam (Kelly) Eanes, 66, passed peacefully at his home on January 5, 2009. Kelly was born March 13, 1942 to Julia Kellam and Ralph Eanes, Sr. He was raised in Thomasville, NC and graduated with a degree in Psychology from UNC Chapel Hill in 1964. From 1964-1966, he served in the Peace Corps in Colombia, South America. He was then drafted by the Marine Corps and served from 1966-1968. He married the love of his life Cecelia Briles of Asheboro in 1969. They lived in Winston-Salem where daughter Andrea Eanes (Randall) was born in 1970, followed by their son Jeremiah Eanes in 1975. They moved to Surry County in 1977, built their solar-powered home of recycled materials and local lumber on communally owned property on the North Fork of the Mitchell River. Kelly worked as a social worker and carpenter until he retired. Kelly was passionate about the social and environmental issues of his time including the Civil Rights Movement, ending the Vietnam War, and opposing nuclear power. He was involved in and cared deeply about the preservation of the Mitchell River. His children were his pride and joy, and Kelly was loved and admired by so many people who knew him. Left to cherish his memory are the following and their families-- wife Cecelia Eanes, daughter Andrea Eanes Randall, son Jeremiah Eanes, son-in-law Rick Randall, granddaughter Sylvia Randall, brothers Ralph H. Eanes, Jr. (Meredith), Carey Eanes (Kay), Robin Eanes (Susan), and George Eanes (Nancy), sister Julie Eanes Clinard (Don), and numerous nieces and nephews. Donations in Kelly' s name may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice Palliative Care, 688 N. Bridge St., Elkin, NC 28621. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, January 24, in the sanctuary of Memorial United Methodist Church, 406 Randolph St., Thomasville, NC. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Christian Enrichment Center.
