The BIN believes William is the son of Etta Briles. Some have him the son of Martha "Mattie" Briles however the dates do not match up. Mattie marries Claude Steed the same year Monroe is born, then has a child less than a year later. Plus Etta dies in 1890 and Monroe is listed as a grandchild living with McCagger Briles in the 1900 census. Mattie Briles Steed leaves NC for Missouri, but lives in Randolph and Montgomery County during the early years with Claude Steed and the kids. Wouldn't Monroe be with Mattie while still living in NC?
