Individual Details
Sarah E. Miller
(Apr 1874 - 15 Jun 1955)
She was the daughter of Elizabeth Sawyer, one of the sisters of Jasper's mother who had married James Miller. (This means that when Jasper married Sarah E. Miller, he married his first cousin for the second time.) Because her son Arley has the last name of Miller, our original assumption was that Sarah was either married to someone who had also had the last name of Miller before she married Jasper or Arley was born out of wedlock and took his mother's maiden name. If Sara was married to a Mr. Miller, we don't know his first name or whether he died or they divorced.
Her middle initial of "E" (which probably stood for "Elizabeth," her mother's first name) comes from the 1910 Census (immediately below) and the 1910 Census of Harrison Township, Kiowa County, Oklahoma.
In the 1900 Randolph County, NC, Census, Sarah E. Douthit [Miller] and her son William J. Douthit are enumerated with Sarah's mother Elizabeth [Sawyer] Miller. Details of this census say that Sarah had been married for 3 years as of June 5, 1900, and that she had 1 child, who was still living. Since her son William J. Douthit was born in June 1898, this seems to indicate that she had married Mr. Douthit in 1897 and that both Mr. Douthit and William were still alive in 1900 but Sarah wasn't living with Mr. Douthit.
NOTE: Both of Sarah's sons, William J. Douthit and Arley Miller, are supposed to have been born in June 1898!!!! Consequently, they must be the SAME person!! Suggestion: Sarah and Mr. Douthit had a child out of wedlock. Either the child's name on his birth certificate or just his original name was William J. Douthit (as per 1900 U.S. Census; See Notes for Elizabeth Sawyer). Sarah probably called him "Arley" as a nickname. Some time after the 1900 Census, she must have started just referring to him as "Arley Miller," which remained his name for the rest of his life. (See also the Notes for Arley Miller.)
Jasper's brother Enoch Elwood Briles was living with Sarah and Jasper when Jasper died in 1933. According to Enoch Elwood's obituary, he continued to live with Sarah after Jasper died. Since she was Enoch Elwood's first cousin, they would have know each other since they were children.
