Burial
Mr. John "Pete" Core, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, died at the residence of his daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Ricky Dodson, in Mebane, NC, on the morning of October 3, 2011, following 2 1/2 years of declining health. He was 77.A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of the late Carolyn Conklin Core and the son of Lyman Doyle Core and Ruth Ray Core, both deceased.
Pete was a veteran of the U. S. Navy serving during the Korean Conflict.
He worked at Western Electric in Burlington, NC and retired from Bell South in Mt. Pleasant, SC.
Pete was inducted into the Graham Sports Hall of Fame for baseball in 2005 and for football in 2006. He was a member of the Northwood Assembly, North Charleston, SC and attended The Lamb's Chapel, Haw River, NC in the past years.
Survivors include his daughter, Jan Core Dodson and husband Ricky of Mebane; his son, Chris Core and wife Peggy of Graham; four granddaughters, Summer Cheek and husband Jason, Amanda Surles, Niki VanHoose and husband Jon and Shea Dodson; two great-grandchildren, Taylor Cheek and Raygan Cheek; an expected great grandchild, Baby VanHoose; and a girlfriend of 12 years, Kathe Young of Mt. Pleasant, SC.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tammy Carol Core and a son, "Chip" Core.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., October 8, 2011, at J. Henry Stuhr Mt. Pleasant Chapel, Mt. Pleasant, with interment following in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens
