Larry Carl Small
(2 May 1948 - 2 Apr 2017)
Larry Carl Small, 68, a resident of Conrad Drive, died Sunday, April 2, 2017 at his home. He was born on May 2, 1948 in Pinehurst, NC to James Carl Small and Ocia Tabitha Briles Small. He graduated from East Davidson High School and after graduation he enlisted in the US Marine Corps. On September 25, 1968, deep in the jungles, a bullet from a Viet Cong AK-47 blew a hole in Larry’s head. His life would never be the same. Doctors told his family that he would never walk or talk again. A year later, he was doing both. Then they told him he wouldn’t live 10 years. 40 years later, he begged to differ. Larry came home a bitter man, but it wasn’t long after that he gave his life to Christ and developed a heart for missions. The biggest test of faith would come when God called Larry back to Vietnam to share Christ’s love with people he’d never forgiven. Larry went… and again, his life would never be the same. Not only did he forgive, he led his translator to Christ and she became his wife. Larry spent over 4 years of his life in hospitals. But Larry was a Marine, he never quit. He still loved to tell people about what God had done for him. He was a proud Marine who served his country. Larry coached Little League Baseball and competed in the National Wheel Chair Olympics, where he won several Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals. He had a love for missionary work and went on overseas mission trips to the Ukraine and Vietnam. He was a member of Green Street Baptist Church. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at 11:30 AM at Green Street Baptist Church in High Point with Rev. Brandon Ware, Rev. Andy Royals, Jr., and Rev. Lark Lewis officiating. Interment will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors provided by the Marine Corps Honor Guard and the Randolph County Honor Guard. Mr. Small will remain at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville until the hour of the service. The family will be at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6:00 – 8:00 pm to receive visitors and friends.
