Austin John Pierce

Austin John Pierce, 90, a resident of Bethlehem Ave. died Sunday, August 28, 2016 at the Hospice Home at High Point. He was born on January 15, 1926 in Randolph County, NC to Gurney Branson Pierce and Nettie Hill Pierce. He retired in 1991 after 30 years from Clyde Pearson Company. He was a member of Green Street Baptist Church and was attending Rich Fork Baptist Church. He was a US Army veteran having served during World War II in the 99th Infantry Division with the Third U.S. Army. He and his buddies of the “Checkerboard” division played leading roles in toppling Hitler’s Fortress Germany. While with General Courtney Hodges’ First U.S. Army, the soldiers of the 99th helped storm through the Siegfried line, then across the Cologne Plain, and were the first infantry division of First Army to bring its forces up to the Rhine. After crossing the famed river, and participating in cleaning out the Ruhr Pocket, the 99th was transferred to General George Patton’s Third Army and assisted in the final grand-slam drive across the Danube to the heart of Bavaria. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Beatrice Small Pierce on August 15, 2016, whom he married on July 13, 1946; and his brother, Raymond Pierce. Surviving are his daughter, Diane Huskey and husband Larry of Thomasville; son, Keith Pierce of Jamestown; grandchildren, Erin Proctor and husband Fred, Amy Pierce, Amanda Hill and husband Erik, and Haley Pierce; and great-grandchildren, Tamarah Proctor, Ty Proctor, Jersey Hill, and Laine Hill. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at 2:30 pm at Rich Fork Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Miller and Rev. Michael Bowers officiating. Interment with military rites provided by the Military Burial Honor Guard will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Due to the recent passing of his wife, Beatrice no formal visitation will be held and the family will be at the home of his daughter, Diane. Mr. Pierce will remain at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home until taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
