Death

Michael Dennis Walker, 59, retired Randolph County Environmental Health Director, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2014 at Carillon of Asheboro. He was born August 28, 1954, in Asheboro, NC; the son of Iris Gunter and the late Edgar Walker. After graduating from Asheboro High School in 1972, he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Biology at East Carolina University. He returned to Asheboro, NC in 1987 and began his career with the Randolph County Environmental Health Department.  In 2001, with his steadfast and unconditional service to the citizens of Randolph County along with the respect of his peers, he achieved the position of Randolph County Environmental Health Director; the culmination of his 22 year career. Mike retired in 2010, pronouncing that his service was an “honor and privilege”. He was lovingly committed to his wife, Cindy of 37 years, and sons, Colin and Evan. Mike’s unwavering patience, humble wisdom, powerful modesty, and dry wit were but a few of his endearing qualities. Mike thoroughly enjoyed communing with nature, serving as an assistant scout master of NC Troop 527 for over a decade. He also enjoyed spending time cooking, gardening, and golfing and fishing with his sons. Mike is survived by his wife, Cindy; Sons, Colin & Evan Walker; Mother, Iris Gunter & husband, Leonard; Sisters, Paula York & husband Terri; Sharon Green & husband, Anthony; Brother, Jon Walker & wife, Anita; Mother-in-law, Evelyn Reaves; Brother-in-laws, Chuck Reaves & wife, Caren and Ross Reaves & wife, Debbie; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 30th at 4pm at First United Methodist Church, Asheboro, NC. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church & Hospice of Randolph County
