William Arthur Briles

William Arthur “Bill” Briles, 88, of Hiawatha, died Friday afternoon, July 16, 2004, at the Hiawatha Community Hospital where he had been a patient a few days.
Bill was born at Phoenex, Nebraska, August 9, 1915, one of two sons born to Jessie Taylor and Mary Susan Brooks Briles. He grew up in the Phoenex area, attended schools there prior to work on the farm with his father. During his 8th grade year, he won the spelling bee. He was an US Army veteran of World War II, stationed in Germany, discharged at the rank of sergeant. He returned to the states, married, and to this union, eight children were born. Prior to returning to Nebraska, Bill worked a short time for a ranch in Wyoming. He then began work for Missouri Pacific Railroad in water maintenance, out of Omaha. He transferred to Atchison, Kansas in 1976 and moved to Falls City in 1979, retiring shortly thereafter with 35 years of service. In 1980, he began work for Al Pratt Plumbing Service in Falls City for 10 years.
Mr. Briles was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Falls City; also the BPOE Falls City Elks Lodge; and through the years, had been very active with the Falls City Senior Citizens Center. His hobbies included gardening, auctions, rodeo’s, fishing, bus trips to casino, walking Sassy, and family time.
He was married to Neva Gilmore, July 5, 1994. They have made their home in Hiawatha all of their married life. She survives.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; two sons Bobby, Larry; granddaughter Heather N. Briles; and a brother Blaine Briles.
Funeral services are planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha. Sam Blythe and Lila Wilson will officiate. Interment will follow at the Burrell Cemetery near Troy, Kansas
Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Tuesday where the family will meet with friends from 7 until 8:30 that evening.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Lighthouse Hospice which may be sent in care of the funeral home, 124 S 7th St., 66434.
