Individual Details
Maria Catharina Gibler
(25 Dec 1742 - 24 Dec 1824)
Maria came to America with her parents when she was very young. She married in 1763, probably in or near Granville Co NC, Johann Martin Beck, who was born 17 Aug 1740 in Rheinland-Pfalz and died 12 Sep 1819 in Stokes Co NC, where he was also buried in the Beck-Shouse Cemetery. (The cemetery was located in Stokes County until Forsyth County was formed in 1849.) After "the Festal preaching service" on Christmas morning, Brother Strole, who was apparently the Moravian minister at nearby Bethabara, went to the home of William Beck where he had been called to preach the funeral sermon for Mr. Beck's mother (Maria), who "fell asleep yesterday" at the age of 82 "less one day." So Maria was buried on Christmas Day of 1824. She had been "much troubled with arthritic complaints" and died "almost unexpectedly" at about 2:30 a.m. on the 24th, "without any great pain" and "happily in the Lord."
Maria and John were parents of eleven children, including William, Frederick, Sarah, Solomon, Salome, Clara, Henry and Abraham.
