Steven McGovern
(27 Jul 1952 - 27 Jul 2012)
Steve McGovern died July 27, 2012, on his 60th birthday, under the care of Asera Hospice at the Hudson Healthcare Center, Hudson, SD, following a lengthy battle with Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome.
Steven Earl McGovern was born in Mitchell, SD on July 27, 1952, to Eleanor and George McGovern. He was born during the summer of 1952, a presidential election year, and was named in honor of Adlai Stevenson, the Democratic standard bearer, deeply admired by the McGovern family.
Steven was the fourth child and the only son among four daughters. Steve's sister, Teresa, died in 1994. Eleanor, his mother, died in January, 2007. Steve said of her death that he'd "lost his best friend."
Steve grew up in Mitchell, SD, and Washington, DC. Those who knew Steve, remember his wonderful sense of humor, his infectious laughter, his lifelong love of learning, and his passion for music and guitar playing. A particular love of Steve's was studying the US Civil War. As a youngster, he re-enacted significant battles with his toy soldiers. He later visited the actual battle field sites, often with his mother in tow. He collected and read almost every book, article and documentary related to the war. He loved Carl Sagan's Cosmos, Star Trek, and was well read on a wide range of topics and genres with an emphasis on history, science fiction, and music.
Steve shared his family's love of cats and dogs, and had a parade of his own beloved pets. Oreo, Hudson's resident cat, was on Steve's bed when Steve died. Sarah and Sam, the gentle and beautiful Golden Retrievers at Hudson, brought joy and comfort to Steve.
Memorials may be directed in Steve's name to the Sioux Falls Humane Society.
Steve's family wishes to express deep and abiding gratitude to the many caregivers who helped him throughout his life; particularly those who showed kindness and compassion at the end of his life. It is recognized that these people work tirelessly under challenging circumstances for little pay. They deserve our support and appreciation for the kindness and care they provide our loved ones.
Steve is survived by his father, George; three sisters, Ann, Susan and Mary; nephews and nieces; numerous cousins; his uncle, Harold Brady; and aunt, Phyllis Riffe.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, August 7, 2012, at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Avenue. Burial will take place at a later date in Washington, DC. The family will be present from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Monday, August 6th, to greet friends
