Stephen was the younger son of William Backhouse III and Elizabeth. He was born in Sheffield, England and came to America with his widowed father and four siblings. He is cited in his father's will as being heir to his father's residence among other items of mention. Later generations shortened the Backhouse surname but Stephen would correctly be referenced with the use of the surname Backhouse since he hails from Sheffield. Some sources in error shorten the Backhouse name to Backus prematurely. Unfortunately this can be greatly attributed to variations of spelling in attempts to record writing the name as some listeners perceived as hearing it. However, church records, military records and numerous documents show the later Delaware and Nicholas County heirs kept the Backhouse surname. The Backhouse name over time was shortened to Backus as the generations spread out over the country but some branches maintained the Backhouse surname without shortening it to Backus until the period of the American Civil War. The direct family branch that spread from Connecticut to Delaware and then to Nicholas County did not shorten the surname to Backus until the generation that coincides with the American Civil War period.
