Individual Details
John Kirby
(1623 - Aft 6 Apr 1677)
John Kirby was registered as "Jo Kirby", aged 12, on the passenger list of the "Hopewell" by Capt. Babb which sailed from London 11 Sept. 1635 for New England. In August 1643, he was registered in Plymouth, Massachusetts as "able to bear arms".Before April 1645, he had become a resident of Hartford, as on the 8th of April. He and Seth Grant had contracted to herd cattle "on the north side of the river for the years ensuing." By 1647 he had become a resident of Wethersfield, where three of his children were born. In 1643, he settled in Middletown, in what is now Cromwell; his homestead being situated in the extreme part of the village at the bend of the Mattabesett River, near the bridge now known as Kirby Bridge. In 1643 he also sold a house and land in Rowington, Warwickshire, England to Richard, son of Thomas Lord of Hartford. John was made a Freeman on May 20, 1658. He left 24 parcels of land comprising of 1068 acres. Part of his original homestead, he sold to his son-in-laws Davis Sage. The inventory of his estate included nine bibles (Connecticut Gens. p. 34 For deed of sale of land in Rowington," "Colonial Records of Connecticut"; and "The Kirby’s of New England)" It is thought he first went to Boston, from there to Hartford in 1645. He was deputy constable, surveyor of highways, pound keeper, and townsman. The above information is from a genealogy submitted by Wilma Andrus Ebel as copied from Jon Beck's book "Elisha S. and Lavina (Locke) Andrus, Their Ancestors and Descendants"
