Mentioned in Phyllis Kinzie e-mail dated 23 Mar 05.
See email sent to Karen Abel in my file:
Regarding Rachel Smith Hopkins, wife of Hendrick Bresee, the evidence appears to show a strong possibility that there were two of them from the same parents. One born prior to the 2 Sept. 1757 baptism date, died 5 Aug. 1758 and a second one born in 1760. To support that: 1. The father was released from the war effort around Nov. 1758 and came home, I am sure, to continue his family. 2. There is a gap in the birth of the children between the first Rachel, born about 1757, and the next child, Ashbel who was born about 1761. See http://dgmweb.net/FGS/H/HopkinsNehemiah-TryphenaSmith.html
3. It is very common to name a child the same as the one that recently died. 4. You have a birth year for the second Rachel of 1760, based on age at time of death, which fits in nicely with the other children. 5 The marriage of Hendrick Bresee and Rachell Smith Hopkins is supported by the similar locations of their parent's families in Stockbridge, Mass. This was very undeveloped country with few families and I doubt there was another Hopkins family in the area. 6. My original source was Betsy C. Robinson, Ph.D. She made the same error on the birth year for Rachel. See attachment. 7. The book "History of the town of Pittsford, VT" page 62, shows the family of Nehemiah Hopkins, including Rachel indicating these children grew to maturity. He left for Pittsford in 1778, when Rachel was 18, the time for marriage with Hendrick Bresee. See Attachment.
