(1768 - 1791)
1774 See the NEHG Register year 1909 Vol 63 Page 342 shows him and his family leaving New Castle, England on the ship Will & Elizabeth for Boston in April 1774.
John Gamsby came from Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland England to Lynn, Mass in about 1773 with his wife Margaret (Henderson). They lived in or near Stratford, Coos, New Hampshire. I believe that all of their children were born in England. I know that Peter was, and I believe that Dorothea was. Most of the Gamsbys were what is called Tory's or Royalists who were true to the King of England during the Revolution. So many of them went to Canada during this time. John(1) and Margaret's children were: John(2) m: Luncia Smith; Peter m: Thankful Smith. (the Smith women were sisters and their parents were Jonathan and Judith (Thayer) Smith. John(1) and Margaret also had a son named George m: Polly Jennison, Dorothea m: Richard Imeson;
The brothers John & Peter moved to Canada. Their numerous descendants are found in Eaton, Cookshire, Quebec and other towns in the vicinity, and some probably moved back to the United States. Peter and Thankful's children were: Henry m: Adaline Learned, 7 children; Margaret b: 30 Aug 1802; M: John Hall; 10 children; Lydia m: Hamilton Carr, ; Ann M: David Edward Hodge, 3 children; Dorothy m: Amasa Frizzell, 2 children; Nelson m: Catherine Sophia Stevens 5 children; William Scott m: Sophia Hodge, 3 children.
George son of John(1) married Polly Jennison. George was known as "Captain George" and dropped dead at a Muster in Colebrook. George and Polly had children: Peter m: Clarissa Lounsbury, 6 children; George m: Olive Hodgon, 3 children; Relief m: James Payton, 3 children; Victory m: Elmina Schoff; Alva, (no further trace)in some of my relatives obituaries I do see a Funeral of Mr. C.G. Sterling, whose widow is Elra (Gamsby) Sterling,they lived in Canada at Lennoxville. This funeral was in 1930. Other children of George and Polly were: Fletcher m: (1) Eleanor Holden (2) Lucina Farman; 6 children; and Russell m: Eveline Marshall. This information comes from a chapter of a book I made copies of the pages with Gamsby's and Smith's the top of the pages read: History of Stratford, but it gives genealogy. Also other information I got from relatives.
