Thomas Benedict Sr.

See "Bouton, Boughton and Farnam Families" by Willis A. Boughton dated 1949 page 137 from Heritage Quest. This shows he was the son of William Benedict III. Came to America in 1638 and to Norwalk, CT in 1655 or earlier, but his children were born in Southold, Long Island, NY.

On page 184 and 309 is the following: Thomas Benedict Senior was born in England and came to New England at the age of 21, and settled in Massachusetts Bay. He afterwords removed to Southhold, L. I.; thence to Hunthington and thence to Jamaica, from whence he removed to Norwalk [Connecticut] in 1665. He had nine children Thomas, John, Samuel, James, Daniel, Betty, Mary, Sarah and Rebeckah, all of whom removed with him to Norwalk. His son Thomas had six children; his son John had nine; Samuel had seven; James had seven, Daniel four; Betty (marriet to John Slausonof Stamford) two; Mary ( married to John Olmsted of Norwalk) ten; Sarah ( married to James Beebe of Stratford) two; Rebeckah was married to Doctor Samuel Wood, but we have record of her children; Gives the name of his wife Mary Bridgum on page 309. Thomas Benedict, was born in 1617 the only son of William Benedict of NottinhamShire, England.
His mother died when he was young.
His Father remarried a widow who's daugher was Mary Bridgum.
Thomas and Mary moved to New England in 1638.
Thomas married Mary his step sister soon after their arrival in Massachusets.
They then moved to Connecticut and then crossed over to Long Island.
Their five sons and and four daughters were born near Southold, Long Island, New York.
They purchased a tract of land in Southold, called Hashamomack in 1649.
In June 1657 they lived in Huntington, Long Island, New York.
May 15, 1662, Thomas as elected and appointed one of two commissioners of Huntington.
1662 Thomas is identified with founding the first Presbyterian church in America at Jamaica.
March 20, 1663 he was appointed a magistrate by the Dutch Governor Stuyvesant.
Sept 29, 1663 he along with others petitioned Connecticut to annex their western towns on Long Island.
He was one of the bearers of the petition to Hartford Connecticut on Nov 3, 1663.
December 3, 1663 he was appointed lieutenant of Huntington.
Sept 8, 1664 the Dutch Governor Stuyvesant surrendered New York to England through Colonel Richard Nichols.
1665 Thomas was one of the two delegates of Jamaica, New York to attend what is thought to be the first English legislative body convened in New York.
April 7, 1665, Thomas was appointed by Governor Nichols, lieutenant of the Foot Company of Jamaica.
Thomas moved his family to Norwalk, Connecticut and purchased land a few years later on May 1, 1669
He was chosen Deacon holding that office during his life.
He became a Selectman of Norwalk and worked as Town Clerk until 1674.
He was reappointed Town Clerk in 1677.
His term as Selectman lasted 18 years ending in 1688.
He was a representative of Norwalk to the General Assembly in 1670 and 1675.
May 1684 the General Court appointed him and three others to organize a town above Norwalk at Paquiage.
Samuel and James, sons of Thomas settled there with there families within the next year.
The name of the town became Danbury.
Thomas' good sense, intelligence, knowledge and skill as a penman made him invaluable to draft papers, survey lands, and arbitrate disputes.
Thomas died between Feb and March of 1690 in Norwalk, Connecticut.
