Thomas "Capers, Capp" Capas

1891 spring time census for Thomas Bayliss and wife Ellen Louisa Capas shows her father, Thomas Capas, age 81 (born 1810), living "on his own means" with the Bayliss family at 10 Park Lane, Aston, Warwick Co. On 11 November 1891, Jane (Ashford) Bayliss, mother of Thomas Bayliss, signed Thomas Capas' death certificate showing him as a master builder. He was living at 12 Park Lane, Aston, at the time. She was living at 54 Upper Suttan St., Aston Manor, at the time. The death certificate read "Thomas Capes".

1885 named in legal action involving 1885 construction by Thomas Capas of 7 homes and sewer pipes for property situated near Green Lane and Wattville Street, Handsworth (Stafford Co. ?) as reported in "The Law Times" dated 10 Feb. 1894, page 798 Vol LXIX., N.S.

1876 birth certificate for his grand-daughter, Eliza Millie Bayliss, states she was born in the Capas Building, Queen Rd., Aston Manor, Edington district, Warwick Co. Thomas Capas may have built this structure.

1874 certificate of marriage for his daughter, Ellen Louisa Capas, shows her father as Thomas Capas who was a builder. She showed a residence at the time as Hansworth, Stafford Co.

1871 census shows him as age 63 (born 1808) living in Willington, Derby Co., a publican (tax collector or licence of a public house) and born in Warwick. He was living with his wife, Sarah age 61, daughters Emma age 18 and Elen age 13. Certificate of marriage for his daughter, Emma Julia, on 30 April 1871 shows her marriage was at St. Peters Church, Derby, Derby Co. She was living at the time on Wilmot St. and that her father, Thomas Capas, was a builder. Daughter Emma Julia married in Derby, Derby Co. in April 1871.

1862 named as a defendant in the "The London Gazette, April 4, 1862" page 1815, Chancery Court.

1861 census shows him age 50 (born 1811) living at 15 Karfoed St., Liverpool, Lancaster Co. and born in Marston, Warwick Co. He is living with his wife Sarah age 50 and their daughters Saraha Ann age 20, Elizabeth age 15, Emma age 9 and Ellen age 3.

1858 christening of two daughters on same date was from IGI and confirmed from church records. The family was living on Kenilworth St., Leamington Priors, Warwick Co.

1857 birth certificate for his daughter, Ellen Louisa Capas, shows the parents as "Capes" and not "Capas". His occupation was a "joiner master". The residence at the time was 12 Bridge St., Chorlton Upon Medlock, Lancaster Co.

1855 Directory for Birmingham from Ancestry.com showed him as a builder living at 32 Warwick St., Birmingham.

1852 certificate of birth for his daughter, Emma Matilda, shows the family was living at 86 Sherlock St., St Martin district, Birmingham. This shows him as a licensed victualler (seller of food and alcoholic drink from his premises).

1851 census shows him as age 39 (born 1812) and his place of birth. The family was living on Woodman Sherlock St., St. Luke dist., St Martin, Birmingham. Also shows he was a builder employing 14 men. Living close to him on Victoria Terrace Sherlock St. in this census was his son William Capas age 20 (born 1831) a carpenter born in Leamington, Warwick Co. and his wife Elizabeth age 21 who was born in Birmingham.

1849 marriage certificate for his son, William, shows him living on Balsall Heath, Kings Norton Registration District, Worcester Co

1847 birth certificate for his daughter, Elizabeth Susanna, shows the family as Capas. The family were living on Balsall Heath, Kings Norton sub-district, Worcester, and he was a builder.

1845 declared bankrupt and living on Bordealey, Aston-juxta-Birmingham, Warwickshire, builder, dealer and chapman, May 8 and June 13, 1845, District Court of Bankruptcy, Birmingham. Reported in "The Jurist" Vol. IX- Part II page 126, found at Google.

1843 christening for daughter, Sarah Ann is per review of St. Martin's Church Register which showed her father, Thomas, as a builder and mother as Sarah Ann also. The family was living on Cumerland Terrace, Birmingham.

1841 census shows him as age 30 (born 1811) with the family living on Lauders Street, St. Nicholas district of Warwick, Warwick Co. He is a carpenter. All family members were born in the county. This shows his wife, Sarah, age 30, Eliza age 6 and Charles age 3.

1838 certificate of birth for his son, Charles, shows the family was living on Bridge St., St. Nicholas district, Warwick, Warwich Co. This certificate was not a copy of the original but a hand written certificate dated 14 May 2002. His occupation was a butcher. The christening info for Charles was from the IGI and was confirmed by review of the Parish Register which also showed Thomas as a butcher living on Emscot, Warwich, Warwick Co.

1834 christening of daughter, Mary Ann, is from IGI and uses the name Caps. Confirmed by review of the Parish Register which showed the parents as Thomas and Sarah "Caps" living on Emscot with the father being a carpenter (film 554732).

1832 christening of son William Charles is from the IGI, Vital Records Index - British Isles and confirmed from church register. All sources show the name spelled as "Capes".

1830 christening of son Charles George is from IGI and confirmed with church register. Both used "Capp" as the last name.

1829 marriage is from the IGI and confirmed by review of All Saints church records, Leamington Priors, Warwick Co. (film 1067479) with John Goome and Charlotte Gardner present at wedding. 1829 marriage transcription on FindMyPast shows his last name as CAPERS.

1812 birth place and year established from the 1851 census. He may be the child of Joseph Capp, and Elizabeth Ancock (see my Capp file). Joseph Capp was a carpenter and could be how Thomass Capas became a carpenter/builder.
