Ruf dated 1932, pages 91-93, found at Heritage Quest Online: "Joseph Downer, Jr., son of Joseph and Mary (Knight) Downer, was born April 25, 1666, and died in Norwich, CT, after June 30, 1722. He removed from Newbury, MA, to the West Farms (now Franklin) district of Norwich, between 1710 and 1716, becoming a landowner at Norwich, May 5, 1716, by purchase of three hundred and sixty acres of land, with buildings from John Wiborn. In October, 1716, both he and his son Joseph were among the signers of a petition that the "West Farmers" be set off as a distinct society, "being from four to eight miles distant from the place of publick worship." He married, at Newbury, MA, in 1692, Hannah Grafton. Childern, first nine born at Newbury, the rest at Norwich."
