Per "The genealogy of the Cleveland and Cleaveland families..etc." by Edmund James Cleveland dated 1899, Vol 3 page 2281, found at Heritage Quest Online: John Cleveland was born in Canterbury, CT 28 Feb 1735, died Upper Coos, Colebrook, Coos Co., NH, 15 Feb 1818, married Canterbury, 17 Feb. 1762, Betsey Downer of Windham, CT, born Hebron, CT, 17 Apr. 1739, died Colebrook, Nov 1822, daughter of Caleb Downer. He was in the French and Indian War; under Gen. James Wolfe at taking of Quebec, Can., 13 Sept 1759. John Cleveland, before the Revolution, moved up the Connecticut River to Bath, Grafton Co., NH, lived there many years, farmer. He and his wife are buried at Upper Coos. Children were born in Canterbury.

John Cleveland was apparently born to Abigail out of wedlock. We will probably never know who his father was. Abigail later married John Adams and had ten children.
