Individual Details
Governor Thomas Mayhew Sr.
(31 Mar 1593 - 25 Mar 1682)
Thomas Mayhew is famous for being the first governor of Martha's Vineyard. He sailed from England in 1631, only a few years after the Pilgrims. He made at least two Atlantic crossings, and sadly his only son drowned at age 36 when he was on a ship voyage to England and the ship was lost at sea (from www.famousamericans.net/thomasmayhew/).
There is a family legacy of the "Missionary Mayhews." The son who drowned, Thomas Jr, had been an amazing preacher to the local Indians. He had established Indian churches and schools, and after his death, his father, 60 year old Governor Mayhew, changed his life's focus. Instead of being concerned with administrative and social affairs as in the past, he spent the next 25 years preaching and walking long distances to native camps to carry on his son's legacy. This missionary effort has been lauded by historians. http://www.familytreerings.org/search/label/Thomas%20Mayhew

Governor Thomas Mayhew was born in 1593, and baptized at Tisbury, Wiltshire, England, 1 April 1593. He died at Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket.
He came to Medford, MA in 1631. Deputy from Medford in 1636. Moved to Watertown, Mass. Was selected commissioner. Built bridge across Charles River. Deputy from Watertown between 1637 and 1644.
Purchased Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and the Elizabeth Islands under Lord Stirling's patent Sept. 1641. His son Thomas Jr., settled Martha's Vineyard in 1642. Thomas Sr. went there in 1646, and as magistrate, administered the purchase as an independent ruler and patentee. Later he was confirmed and appointed Governor for life by Francis Lovelace, Governor NY under the Duke of York, proprietary successor to Stirling and Gorges. The appointment was later confirmed by Gov. Andros. 1659 he sold Nantucket to the nine partners. In 1664 New York claimed jurisdiction over the islands and organized them into Ducks County. In 1692, the islands were ceded to Massachusetts. In 1695, Nantucket was set off to become its own county known as Dukes.
