News Pub (ind)19 Oct 1933The Cessnock Eagle reported: " BURIED UNDER FALL OF COAL. Richmond Main Miner Killed Workmates' Heroism. Partially buried beneath a large fall of coal at Richmond Main Colliery yesterday afternoon, Jesse Baker, miner, received injuries which resulted in his death shortly afterwards. Baker, who was working in No. 14, Pillar, North Eastern District, was crushed against a skip by the fall which came away. His workmate, Thomas Tunney, worked gallantly to extricate his buried comrade, and with the assist- ance of other miners who rushed from parts of the workings, they were rewarded by their efforts. When released it was obvious that Baker was seriously injured, and shortly afterwards he collapsed and died before reaching the surface. Life was pronounced extinct by the Government Medical Officer (Dr. J. T. Tennent). Baker was 49 years of age, and resided at Wallsend Street, Pelaw Main. The Kurri Coroner (Mr. A. W. Johns) formally opened an inquest, which he adjourned. Baker was a married man with nine children. The funeral left his late residence at 4 o'clock this afternoon, the interment being made in the Church of England portion of the Kurri Kurri cemetery.
