News Pub (ind)12 Dec 1846in the Sydney Morning Herald Joseph put his name to the movement against transportation as the following add which appeaared in the Sydney Morning Herald attests: "TO THE RIGHT WORSHIPFUL THOMAS BROUGHTON, ESQ., MAYOR OF THE CITY OF SYDNEY. WE, the undersigned Delegates from the various trades appended to our names, most respectfully request that your Worship will call a Public Meeting on the Race Course when it suits your convenience, in order to adopt such measures as the meeting may deem fit ; and prepare Petitions to be presented to our Most Gracious Sovereign the Queen and both Houses of Parliament, against the Revival of Transportation to these Colonies.
