He sailed for the Middle East on 20 Dec 1915 & after training there he served in France. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 6 Jun 1917. He spent quite a considerable time in England both in signals training & in hospital during his period of service in Europe. He sailed from London on the "Orsova" 15 Jan 1919, listed as an invalid, arriving home 20 Feb 1919. He was finally discharged from the army 17 Apr 1919
