Notes
Birth
1814 birth date is from his tombstone but his birth date is between 1820 and 1827 based on his age in the 1850 through the 1870 censuses.Divorce
Mary Ann Wilhelm filed for divorce from Samuel Helman in August, 1892 since he was married before and his wife was still living. The divorce was granted in September, 1892. She filed for divorce then since she could not receive a widow's pension on her first husband's Civil War service until she obtained a divorce from her second husband. The government wanted her to obtain a divorce although the marriage to her second husband was not valid since he had never obtained a divorce from his first wife, Sarah Custer. The Civil War pension file for Mary Ann Wilhelm includes the original marriage certificate for she and Samuel Helman and their divorce papers. It is available online through the National Archives catalog.Endnotes
