Chrisitian HIMES

(Abt 1814 - Bet 1 Sep 1864 and 8 Sep 1864)

In the summer of 1864, Christian Himes owned 1/3 of 1/2 of two stores. One store was located in New Salem, Armstrong Co., PA, and the other store location is unknown. Abraham Kunselman owned half of each business and Christian, his younger brother Samuel, and Samuel's oldest son Levi G. Himes owned the other half of each store. According to Abraham Kunselman's testimony, Samuel and Levi went to a bank back east (name and place unknown) borrowing $900.00 to pay for their share of the first store. Christian was left behind to take care of the stores. When Samuel and Levi returned Christian was dead. Samuel went down to Christian's house and took $5.00 out of his pocket. Samuel asked Abraham not to appraise any money Christian had invested in each store as there were debts to pay in Pittsburgh. The second store sold for $2068.00 which Samuel and Levi got. At the time of Christian's death, his 3 oldest sons (Isreal, Solomon, and Joseph) were all in the Civil War. Christian's wife Mary Ann (Polly) was not eligible to settle his estate. Samuel died in August 1865. Samuel made Levi the Executor of Christian's estate.

Christian had 3 minor children at the time of his death. Guardianship of Rebecca, and George W. Himes was given to Solomon Hoch. No record of guardianship has been found for the youngest son Valentine.

Death

Letters of Administration were granted to Christian's brother, Samuel Himes on 9 September 1864. After Samuel Himes death in 1865, letters of administration were granted to his son, Levi G. Himes, on 12 December 1865.
