"Susannah Hammond of Pickens District aged 89 years...states she was married to Philip Prater who was a private in the militia of South Carolina during the war of the Revolution and served under Capt. Maxwel and either Col. Pickens or Anderson or both...she has heard him relate of his services...that he served for a considerable length of time during the war...she thinks over one or two years, and she suffered much during the time with her three little children, hiding out and dodging from Tories and British.."
