Individual Details

Archelaus Archibald PRATER

(Aft 1768 - 5 Jun 1854)

The area where Archelus bought land in SC is now Pickens County (Pickens was formed in 1826.) The actual area is between what is now Easley, SC and Greeneville, SC -- just west of the Saluda River.

Robert L. Mason's "History of Cannon County, Tennessee" states that Archelus acquired four tracts of land on Parchcorn Creek on the headwaters of Stone River between 1814 and 1828 and that in about 1815 to 1816 Archelus built a grist mill on one 8-acre tract. Goodspeed's Histories of Cannon County, 1972 reprint of an 1887 edition, states Archelus' mill on a branch of Stone River was build in "about 1820."

With regard to controversy about his name being Archelus/Archibald Prater/Prather -- I've found reference to only one document in which he signed. 1828 Warren County Deed Book Q pp 242-243: Deed for sale of 200 acres of land on east fork of Stones River on Thomas Creek (now Parchcorn Creek) by "Archibald" Prater to Benjamin Pendleton for $600. Signed and sealed 15th day of November 1828; witnessed by (...) Patrick and Samuel Lance; signed by "Archibald Prater." -- Bob Prater

Regarding the prior paragraph, his father Basil, in his first will of 1832, specifically mentions "Archeleus".
