Anthony Thomas PRATER III, immigrant
(Bef 26 Dec 1604 - Abt 1666)
In the 1623 VA census, he is shown as a servant in the household of John Powell.
Thomas Prater (Prather) came to America mainly because his grandfather, younger brother of Col. Richard had lost most of his power, status, etc. because he was excommunticated from the Church for his "extortionate pactices". ..... Thus with out his position and power as a "Reeve" for the Earl of Bolingbroke, he had little to pass on to his heirs. His grandson Thomas came to America to seek his own fortune.
In fact, this is speculation: that Thomas Prather, of Virginia, was son of the above couple of Eaton Water, Wilts. Maryland descendants of this alleged gateway ancestor should also be aware that it is just speculation that Jonathan Prather of Maryland may be the son of the Virginian Thomas Prather. The Prater book, previously mentioned in this thread, is useful on this question, but does not sufficiently emphasize that the link across the water is supposition. -- Nat Taylor
There is no documentary evidence that Thomas Prater who came to colonial Virginia on the 'Marie Providence' in 1622 and was enumerated in Elizabeth Cittie w/ the Powell family is the same as Thomas Prater, s/ of Thomas Prater & Margaret Quintyne who was chr. 12/1606 St. Mary's, Marlborough, Wilts., or that he/either of them were the father of Jonathan Prater of colonial MD who d. before 21 Aug 1680. -- Judy Baugh, PRATHER-L, 25 Feb 2006
