Bateman-Capstick Genealogy (Westmorland+)

Welcome to this website covering primarily my Bateman (paternal) and Capstick (maternal) ancestors. It's a simple duplication of my RootsMagic source database as at the time of upload. The presence of any living person is denoted only by the placetag 'living'.

The best starting point for a visitor's exploration is to click either 'Name Index' or 'Pedigree' at the left <<, and then navigate from there by clicking on the various icons and names, and discovering what they reveal. The Help option gives additional information. The different colours in the charts represent particular ancestral lines. All errors are mine. Any comments or corrections welcome.

The photo, taken in September 2020, is of Crook-o-Lune bridge, tucked below the Howgill Fells where it crosses the River Lune near to the hamlet of Beck Foot, and its iconic railway viaduct. The Lune forms the boundary between the former counties of Westmorland and the West Riding of Yorkshire, which were subsumed into newly-created Cumbria in 1974.

Built in the 16th Century (possibly earlier), the bridge [at coordinates: 54°21'39.3"N; 2°35'09.0"W; what3words - hydrant.speedily.nipped] connects the local regions of Dillicar and Firbank (at the Westmorland bank to the left, as viewed) and Howgill (Yorkshire bank). This handful of square miles has comprised a concentrated homeland through many generations of my Bateman and Capstick ancestors - predominantly farmers or blacksmiths - with Batemans mainly at the river's left bank and Capsticks mainly at the right.

(William) Alan Bateman.
